    Congratulations, Fons Baerken!

All I can say to @Fons Baerken is CONGRATULATIONS on completing the Create Every Day In 2017 challenge! You were the only person who made it and it has been quite a journey looking through your lens every day of last year. How do you think doing the challenge has changed you as a photographer? Was it something you can recommend to others?

    Day 4 of 365

Today it has been raining steadily since I woke up at about 4am. I knew going into the day that doing anything outdoors wasn't going to be likely, so I got on with my usual plodding around. I may have mentioned in another post that I am in the process of re-branding myself and my services, so the last couple of days I have been re-writing copy on my main photography website as well as re-designing a few pages there to include additional services I am going to be offering this year. I also took on the somewhat daunting task of upgrading my billing software which is all online. I re

    Create Every Day In 2017

I want to pose a challenge to you for 2017. I think it was Stephen King who said that the creative process within him comes about by simply doing the work he was born to do every day, even on the days when he doesn’t feel like sitting down and writing. The best ideas come when you are immersed in the actual creative process, be it sitting down to write or going outside to make photographs. If you are forcing yourself to make something out of nothing every day, it gets the creative engine running and while that's running it will eventually lead you to a place of rhythm where the bo

    Day 22 of 365

From the album: CEDI 2017 Challenge

The lesson I learned today this week about this challenge is that you can take the easy way out and make rubbish photos (like most of what I posted this week), or you can put in a little bit of effort, actually challenge yourself and make something you'll be pleased with. I'm very pleased with this image. About 2 hours ago I was sitting here at my desk and I thought, shoot... what am I going to shoot today? It was already getting dark, so going out wasn't going to happen. I had to do something indoors. I tried photographing my dinner and I did a terrible job (although dinner was r

I'm calling this "Old Timers EXIF". I think it's pretty self-explanatory to anyone with a passing understanding of digital photography. iPhone 5S. Rainy day (surprise, it's Friday!).

    Day 19 of 365

From the album: CEDI 2017 Challenge

You've seen me post quite a few Durban skylines at sunrise, but I don't think I have ever posted one at sunset, so here we go. See if you can pick out the building that was on fire the other day. Shouldn't take you too long.

    Day 15 of 365

From the album: CEDI 2017 Challenge

I first tried this craft beer at Little Bush Camp on Safari in 2015. It's probably one of the tastiest lagers I have ever tried. Expensive, as all craft beer seems to be, but seeing as I hardly drink any alcohol these days it's definitely worth it.

    Day 16 of 365

From the album: CEDI 2017 Challenge

This shot I'm calling "Dash Cam" because I deliberately focused on the little Olympus trinket hanging from my rear view mirror. There was a hobo walking by in front of the van at the same time which kind of works for me with him being out of focus. This shot is taken down where I was born and grew up, right near the water's edge of Addington beach. I usually go down there if I am feeling melancholy and need to remember what it was like to be young. Today I wasn't feeling melancholy but I had to get out of the house for a little while just to remind myself that a world beyond this

    Day 13 of 365

From the album: CEDI 2017 Challenge

Today it's Friday 13th and I've almost completed 2 weeks of the 365 day challenge. This is tough! I'm not going to candy coat it, I don't know if I can finish, but I will definitely try. I guess to a large extent once you get into this habit of presenting an image for every day of the year it should become easier. Anyway, I'll get going for as long as I can. So, yesterday I was going to take my iPhone on my run and try and do something creative with it on the track around our local park. The weather had other ideas so I had to make a somewhat crappy image of stuff in the corner of

    Day 17 of 365

From the album: CEDI 2017 Challenge

Out with the old and in with the new. Or perhaps, the start of my "Blue Phase"? I may have mentioned that a few months ago I started running. Not very far and not very fast (I did do one timed 5km Park Run in December), mostly around my neighbourhood. I wrote about this here. Up until a couple of hours ago I didn't have proper running shoes. The shoes on the outside shown here are a pair of Salomon training shoes. I don't think you are supposed to run in them. Well, not far anyway. They hurt my feet which isn't a good thing for running. So I got these Nike running shoe

The iron mask. Today's photo is of an iron mask I have hanging up on my wall. I lit it from below with a remote speed flash and used a Sigma 60mm f/2.8 Art DN lens to get in close. I also burned to black the white parts of my wall using the dodge tool in Lightroom with the Auto-mask feature turned on. Taking it down by 4 stops make it completely black which gave the scene a more ominous look.

    Day 14 of 365

From the album: CEDI 2017 Challenge

It's a few hours late but here it is, the 14th image of my 365 project. We got in from the show after 11pm last night and I wasn't about to start editing, so apologies for the delay. This is Rob Warren, of the band The Black Lapels. They put on shows at the sole surviving independent theatre in our entire province, the Rhumbelow. It's quite sad that most of the indies have closed down over the past few years. I guess in a way it's indicative of a change in the way people view entertainment. Anyway, this show was a tribute to the music of Creedence Clearwater Revival a
