A Weeklong Private Photographic Safari At Phinda - Designed By Fotozones

This safari has been designed specifically for photographers looking to get great opportunities to photograph not only the Big 5, but also cheetah and black rhino, which are prevalent in this reserve.

    Safari Details

    The Safari Objective

The main objective of this private safari is to provide you with maximum opportunities to get great photos of the animals you will encounter in their natural habitat at Phinda, including the Big 5 (rhino, elephant, leopard, lion and buffalo) as well as cheetah, antelope and a large assortment of African birdlife (436 species on record here).

    Point Of Arrival

You will need to arrive at King Shaka International Airport in Durban, a city located on the east coast of South Africa. From here you will be met at the airport by a Fotozones representative and transferred to a luxury guest house in Umhlanga Rocks, an upmarket seaside suburb about 20km north of the city. Here you will be able to unwind and relax, either at the beach or the guest house.

    About Rock Lodge

The Phinda Rock Lodge comprises 6 luxury suites set into a cliff face overlooking Leopard Rock. You will be given the use of a complimentary pair of Swarovski binoculars to use while on your safari. Each suite has its own private splash pool and viewing deck providing spectacular views of the reserve. There is also in-room wifi available and optional wellness treatments such as massages and exercise gear.

    Game Drive Vehicles

Phinda use open top Land Cruiser vehicles with three rows of seats behind the driver. The general rule with safari vehicles at Phinda is that there are 2 people per row, so a maximum of 6 guests per game drive. It is possible to book a private safari vehicle for however many days you require it. The price is dependent on availibility but generally it works out similar to the cost of one person sharing a room per day.

    Getting There

There are a number of international airlines flying into Johannesburg, from where you can connect to Durban (which is a 1 hour flight). You will need to arrive at King Shaka Airport.

We use a road transfer from Durban to Phinda for this safari instead of flying to the airstrip, mainly because the luggage restrictions on smaller planes flying directly into the game reserve are quite strict and push the prices up considerably. The N2 route to Phinda is an excellent dual carriageway road and will take approximately 3.5 hours from Durban's King Shaka airport.

    Day 1

Arrive in Durban at King Shaka International Airport. You will be collected from the airport and transferred to our 5 star guest house in Umhlanga Rocks where you can settle in to recuperate or explore the beach and surrounding areas.

    Day 2

You will be transferred to Phinda. On arrival at the lodge you will have a late lunch, settle in and then head out on your first game drive at around 4pm.

    Days 3 to 7

Your typical day will begin half an hour before sunrise with coffee and light breakfast snacks before heading out for the morning game drive (about 3 hours). On returning to the lodge you will enjoy a full breakfast, followed by an optional walking safari. Lunch is usually at 1pm. Afternoon game drives begin at around 4pm and are open ended, depending on what you find on safari. Dinner will happen on returning from the drive.

    Day 8

You will start the day with the morning game drive, followed by breakfast and then on return will check out and await transfer back to King Shaka airport in Durban. If you require an additional night accommodation in either .
