PHINDA FOREST LODGE
A 9 Night Private Safari At Phinda & Durban - Designed By Fotozones
This safari has been designed specifically for photographers looking to get great opportunities to photograph not only the Big 5, but also cheetah and black rhino, which are prevalent in this reserve.
The Safari Objective
The main objective of this private safari is to provide you with maximum opportunities to get great photos of the animals you will encounter in their natural habitat at Phinda, including the Big 5 (rhino, elephant, leopard, lion and buffalo) as well as cheetah, antelope and a large assortment of African birdlife (436 species on record here).
Point Of Arrival
Included in the price of the safari are 3 nights of accommodation in Umhlanga Rocks (split between 2 nights at the beginning and 1 night at the end of your safari). Umhlanga Rocks is an upmarket, popular seaside town 20 km north of the city of Durban, South Africa. Here you will be able to unwind and acclimatise after your long flight, rinsing off any jet lag in the warm Indian ocean waters, or simply relaxing by the pool at our guest house. We can also arrange day tours to any of the many attractions on the East Coast of South Africa if unwinding is not in your vocabulary.
About The Camp
The Phinda Forest Lodge comprises 16 private suites, each nestled intimately into one of Africa's last remaining "dry sand" forests. The suites are designed in an eco-friendly manner and with their full glass floor to ceiling walls you will feel entirely immersed in the forest, free to observe nature from the comforts of your king size bed, soaking tub or private deck using a complimentary pair of Swarovski binoculars.
Game Drive Vehicles
Phinda use open top Land Cruiser vehicles with three rows of seats behind the driver. The general rule with safari vehicles at Phinda is that there are 2 people per row, so a maximum of 6 guests per game drive. It is possible to book a private safari vehicle for however many days you require it. The price is dependent on availibility but generally it works out similar to the cost of one person sharing a room per day.
This safari has been designed around the new London - Durban direct flight from British Airways which will see you arrive in Durban early morning from London, England. However, if you are arriving from elsewhere and landing in Johannesburg, there are many options to connect you to Durban, which is a 50 minute flight. If you need us to make these flight arrangements for you we'll be happy to do so.
We use a road transfer from Durban to Phinda for this safari instead of flying to the airstrip, mainly because the luggage restrictions on smaller planes flying directly into the game reserve are quite strict and push the prices up considerably. The N2 route to Phinda is an excellent dual carriageway road and will take approximately 3.5 hours from Durban's King Shaka airport.
Arrive in Durban at King Shaka International Airport. You will be collected from the airport and transferred to our 5 star guest house in Umhlanga Rocks where you can settle in to recuperate or explore the beach and surrounding areas.
Free day. There are a variety of local activities that you can enjoy, including cultural tours or adventures. We will be able to make recommendations for guided excursions based on your preferences. In the evening Fotozones will present you with a traditional South African braaivleis (BBQ) at the guest house.
You will be transferred to Phinda. On arrival at the lodge you will have a late lunch, settle in and then head out on your first game drive at around 4pm.
Days 4 to 8
Your typical day will begin half an hour before sunrise with coffee and light breakfast snacks before heading out for the morning game drive (about 3 hours). On returning to the lodge you will enjoy a full breakfast, followed by an optional walking safari. Lunch is usually at 1pm. Afternoon game drives begin at around 4pm and are open ended, depending on what you find on safari. Dinner will happen on returning from the drive.
You will start the day with the morning game drive, followed by breakfast and then on return will check out and await transfer back to King Shaka airport in Durban. If you are booked on the early morning British Airways return flight to London you will head back to the Umhlanga Rocks guest house for one more night and an early morning trip back to the airport.
