Let’s just say you, like me, make money out of photography by being able to do things with cameras and software that non-experienced photographers firstly have no clue on how to do, and secondly don’t have the patience to be able to learn. It’s a good situation for us to to be in, because we are filling a need that this other person has and of course we can charge them for these skills we have developed. But what if something came along that enabled that non-experienced person to produce images that are very close to what we can create with our skillset?

I’ve got a big problem with the way weddings are being photographed these days and it’s for various reasons that I don’t offer wedding photography as part of my services. The number one issue I have with it is that it’s not about the wedding anymore. It’s about this monster that wedding photographers have come to call “the creative shoot”.

...but two years ago I was fully digital with an extensive Fuji-X outfit and a Sigma sd Quattro-H and some classic lenses as my main working tools, and the only vestige I had of my initial 35 years in film photography was an all-but abandoned Mamiya RB/RZ outfit.

So there I was in early 2008 with a giant hole in my finances and apparently no way of fixing it that made any sense to me. To make matters worse our landlord had sold the house we were living in and we had until the end of January to find a new home.

I got hooked on photography when I was 32 years old, so by my reckoning almost 20 years have passed since I bought my first "serious" camera. But the obsession didn't start there, it went way back to when I was just 12. As a boy I was given a Canomatic "Instamatic" camera by my parents for my 12th birthday and I loved it, but it wasn't like the SLR cameras I would see in the windows of camera stores around the city. Those cameras looked the business.

The Laowa/Venus 100mm F/2.8 2x APO for Close-Up

This lens caught my eye primarily for several reasons. It was a macro lens that went to 2x magnification. That I liked. Secondarily, it claimed to be apochromatic (APO), that is: highly corrected. And third (and last in importance), it was inexpensive at around $500. And the Sony E-Mount version has 13 aperture blades, which also seems a plus.

Olympus South Africa very kindly loaned me an E-M1X for my recent Photo Safari to Sabi Sabi and while I only had a few days before leaving on the trip to become accustomed to the camera, I did manage to produce some great images (by my standards) while using it in conjunction with the Olympus 300mm f/4.0 PRO.

Olympus E-M1 Mk II Firmware 3.0

I just got word that Olympus has updated the firmware in the E-M1 Mk II and this sees it now getting a lot more of the features that the E-M1X has, including improved AF, expanded ISO range (down to ISO 64) as well as some other stuff that I didn't even know these cameras could do. Here's Robin Wong to run through some of the details.
