I often seen this area in elevated views like yours - it's a good one, it looks almost alien - but I do wonder what it looks like from ground level and how crazy it is to wander into those valleys.

the badlands are more like canyons than mountains so most of the viewpoints are looking down at them.  there's a section that you can ride through that goes above ground, i'll post a few photos of that.  there are hiking trails, but most of them are short boardwalk areas, the rest are marked with signs telling you it's dangerous to go further.
