Photo Outing

First time in a long while that I have done any photography for myself. This morning my older son and I joined a group of photographers down at the yacht basin in Durban for a sunrise shoot. Got some OK shots, I think.

All shots with Panasonic G9. First one is with the 8-18mm Leica and LEE Seven5 filters (ND0.9 + hard grad 0.3), the balance were with either the Panasonic 14-45mm or the Pan/Leica 12-60mm.

Very beautiful sunrise. I like them overall, but I think the challenge here is elevating a scene like this to the 'next level' - how can one make the sailboats in the foreground more interesting? Living in a beach town I see the same scenes here (it actually looks almost exactly like a place in San Diego, cept for the shape of the background high rises). So how can one move it from a 6/10 to an 8/10 (or better)?

Thanks for the comments, Greg.

Well, I don't know that every shot we take has to be next level. For me this was just a chance to get out and do some photography that clients didn't commission. Some of the other participants were doing some light painting with a torch (flashlight in American lingo) and they got the yachts to light up a little on the hulls. Was interesting to see on the WhatsApp group the different approaches to the subject matter by those involved.

Here's one I found that I took with the Fujifilm X100 on the same morning. I used the Lightroom AI Noise removal on this one - that is some amazing processing! Just a pity it takes so long to run on my computer. I think this one took 4 minutes to process. The result was pretty good though.

I am a sucker for these kinds of early morning photos and have come back to the thread several times.   Always interesting what colours you get and how quickly that they change as the sun emerges.

The AI removal shot is interesting - I must try this for myself.

Thanks Hugh. I really enjoyed this outing too. Need to get back and do some more of these before the summer arrives and the sun starts to come up at about 4am here.

For the last shot I changed the white balance to make it a lot warmer. I think I set it to 6500K.
