Pentax DSLRs - Yes, I'm Experimenting! (Image Heavy)

My local camera store, last Friday, had a Pentax K-3 on their shelf.   Not a lot of money was asked, and I had some trade...so for just a few bucks out of pocket I walked out of there with the K-3 and for lack of a better option in lenses, the smc Pentax-DA 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 ED IL WR lens  (I thought other makers had a lot of word soup associated to their lenses!!).

Initially, I thought it would be something similar in IQ and overall look to the Pentax Q or the GR II/GRIII.  I could not have been more wrong.

I had to sit down and figure out an appropriate Lightroom preset for processing them.  The in camera JPG engine is not quite up there to my liking by default so am currently looking to tweak a custom profile.  I'm 99% there I think except for nailing the sharpening characteristics.

The 18-135mm is also a challenge.  When you are so used to the quality of optics from today's cameras   (the 180135mm is from 2010, I believe) this superzoom needs to be stopped down to get to a level of acceptable to me.  I've found some good deals on a 40/2.8 Limited and a 70/2.4 Limited.  On the flight from Japan here soon, which I hope to change my opinion on the Pentax optics.

Sharing some samples here over the last few days of shooting/experimenting.

The monochromes are SOOC JPGs from the Pentax monochrome (tweaked by me) picture profile.

I'll be running this beasty little APS-C camera through the paces for the next few weeks and It and the lenses I get for it will also get reviewed.

Initial impression is that I like the camera and the shooting experience.  The menu system and some of the way you need to set options is a little different than what I'm used to...so that will take some time for adjustment.  It is nice to have a DSLR with IBIS.

At this point, even with the sensor MP disparity, I still prefer the Minolta Maxxum 7D (6mp) over this K-3 (24mp).   A lot of that may have to do with the glass; the Minolta lenses are fantastic even given their age, regardless of zoom or prime!

I shoot Nikon, Olympus, Minolta, Pentax and Leica.  Probably not enough!  LOL

Your Minolta shots are always amazing considering the age of that gear. These ones are different, for sure. The contrast seems quite strong, but I put that down to your processing. Sharpness seems good to me and again, this is most likely the nature of the lens you got with it.

Looking forward to reading your reviews. 🙂

I did indeed "muck" with the color profiles a bit.  I like my stuff a little more contrasty.   The lens is decent in the center, but get even slightly outside that circle and it falls apart.  The true test will be with the primes.

I did adjust the picture control and sharpening settings today.   Definitely better.

Ran into an issue with the K-3.  Even went over to see if the people over at Pentax Forums had any guidance.

Oddly, if I use any focus point outside of the very center one, the focus is off. Even though it looks right in the viewfinder and the AF confirmation is solid.

Did extensive testing and it happens with all lenses but only at distance, 2-3 meters and beyond.

If I use the center point to focus and recompose, everything is peachy.  Weird, but tolerable as I like the other characteristics of the Pentax enough to use it as a focus and recompose camera - especially with the Limited prime lenses.
