Where my camera gear used to live.

Where it lives now.

The dry cabinet is something I have wanted for years and years. Now I finally have one. It keeps the humidity at a steady 42%. This one is a 30L with two levels. I can fit my entire kit in there and there is room for a few more small lenses or bodies.

I recently moved from my apartment to a house and faced a big problem to get a dry cabinet.

You can't find a big enough around here and the small ones are very expensive.

So I ordered one, custom made from a shop specialized in aluminium and glass services.

I had to design it for them, and asked to all glasses and door to be air tight.

They did a quite decent job.

You can see the dehumidifier and thermometer/higrometer but not the hose to remove the water from the dehumidifier.

you also can see the black rubber that make the air tightness possible.

They installed a power outlet inside for the dehumidifier.

The shelves are made of wood.

It costed me around US$ 1400.

Because the lack of this cabinet all my gear was stored in bags in a very messy room and I spent more than 5 months without touching them.

Wow! Now that is a camera collection! Seriously impressive, Aguinaldo.

I have been wondering what my little cabinet does with the water. There are no outlet pipes or evaporation trays that I can see. It wasn’t very expensive, coming in at around $120 on special. I hope it isn’t some kind of a gimmick?

Living on what in reality is a rather large island that has a cool temperate climate situated in the northern part of the Great Southern Ocean in the shadow of the Australian mainland, and additionally being within 100 metres of one of the main rivers on that island, I'm lucky enough to never have had the need for either a humidifier (for my guitars) or dehumidifier (for my cameras). The humidity almost always stays in the mid-to-high 40's here, ideal for both guitars and cameras (and human beings, for that matter 😄).

Lucky you.

I live near the beach and if you don't take any precautions the mold will destroy the lenses very fast.

The industry should create a lens coating that is less mold friendly.

.

I don't understand the need for a dry cabinet.

I keep my photo gear (over a dozen cameras and about 60 lenses) in my basement.   I have a large dehumidifier down there and various humidity gauges.  I never let the humidity down there get above 45%.

Also, I'm a nut about saving water.  I catch all my rainwater from the roof and use it.  Each day, I get one or two free toilet flushes using the water that I collect in my basement humidifier.

In humid climates like the tropics and sub-tropics there is just too much humidity for large scale humidifiers to be effective. We average 80-90% humidity for 6 months of the year. Mould is a serious problem here.
