Coastal photography is one of my favourite things to do, once a year in my holidays, that is... From my last trip (2021) I like this one:

Another shot from the same time. Robin Island is on the horizon.

Living inland on this island of Tasmania limits my opportunity to visit coastal locations with any frequency, but this is the dawn view one gets of the North West coast of Tasmania as the overnight Spirit of Tasmania vehicular ferry from Melbourne arrives in Devonport after crossing Bass Strait, taken at around 5:30 a.m. in November 2011 (two images stitched, taken with my then brand new Fuji X100).

Part of the coast at Carteret, on the west of the Cherbourg Peninsula in Normandy. The beach disappears at high tide. The tidal range is between five and ten metres, twice a day. Don't leave your towel and expect it to be there when you return!745118978_20220619_Carteret_1142copy.jpg.233a171fde82bbd4d20ba8bac5b0f5ee.jpg

This was the local beach where I grew up as a kid - the North Sea coast of England.  Sometimes the weather got a bit nicer, but the water never got any warmer.

It’s a bit of a contrast to where I live now, Melbourne has it’s bay beaches

And a little bit further down the road are the ocean beaches.

The above post got me thinking - I've always lived near the coast, except for the four years while I was at university and lived in Birmingham, in the English Midlands.  I've never lived at the coast,  but always near enough that a trip to the beach could be a spontaneous event - no need for careful planning or an early start.

I've also been thinking about what appeals to me about the coast, as noted in the first picture above, I grew up in a location with cold water, so I've never gotten into water based sports like surfing or sailing.  I'm also not that interested in sitting on a beach and doing nothing.  I guess the interest for me is watching the interaction of land and water, so a trip to the beach for me usually involves a bit of a walk and taking photos.

Anyway, here is a photo dating back to my university years where a trip to the coast was a big undertaking - in this case a long weekend trip to Cornwall.

I can't imagine not living near the sea. Apart from the 2 years that were stolen from me for military service I have lived within 5km of the shore my entire life. My recent move has put me 11.34km away from the ocean (as the crow flies), which is the most inland home address I have ever had. Just this morning I returned to the shoreline for the first time in months to go and check out this new Fujifilm XH2s and the new 150-600mm lens. More about that in another post. It was chilly as the Drakensberg is currently covered in snow, but was great to see so many people out and about there. They also have a Park Run along the promenade every Saturday morning so getting back to my car was like playing a real life version of Frogger! :D

Keep the coastal pics coming folks!

I was born where it says uShaka Marine World in the bottom right of the frame and lived there for the first 22 years of my life. :)
