Advice For OM-Systems (DPreview)

Chris & Jordan touch on some important points that I mostly agree with regarding the new camera OM-1 and where it failed to hit the mark. For me though the megapixels thing isn't important at all, so it isn't what I would be looking for in a camera. That problem would, however, be eradicated if there was a faster sensor processor in the camera that could in fact allow high res mode to be used more effectively on more subjects. There really isn't any technological reason why they wouldn't be able to do this now. 

 

What are your thoughts on the points raised in the video?

The new OM-1 is best summed up for me as being evolutionary rather than revolutionary and the YouTube clip seems to be saying that.

 

My initial reactions to the OM-1 was that it is simply an OMD E-M1 Mk4 and I will continue to stick with that assessment. 

 

If my E-M1 and E-M1 Mk2 were to die in the next couple of years (most unlikely) or I was an E-M5 shooter and wanted to move up a notch then yes I would buy it or maybe if I were a birder and needed the new anticipatory burst shooting mode.  But for landscapes and the like what I have will suffice.  The new 40-140mm f/4.0 lens does however excite me, so it is still pleasing that OM Systems are continuing to develop the E-M1 / OM-1 line as a whole.  Maybe the next version.

My feeling with these camera upgrades is that unless they are meeting a specific need they tend to be more of a hassle than anything else. I hate having to learn a new button layout (I still struggle sometimes with the Lumix G9's layout), but the thing that I find most objectionable is that after a while the older cameras will not be useful at all because you won't be able to find batteries for them.

 

This is the issue with the original Olympus E-M1 now. It is very difficult to find OEM batteries for that camera. So what do you do with it when your batteries won't charge anymore? Chuck it in the bin? Fortunately I can still use mine in studio because I managed to find an a/c power supply for it, but I really think that somebody should be telling manufacturers that they need to standardise their batteries. Wouldn't it be great if you could run all your digital cameras on penlights like we used to in the film days? I guess they'd need to improve the capacity of penlights quite dramatically, but if they can make cars run on batteries now, surely a little camera shouldn't be such a big task to power up?

Frankly, I see nothing that this new MFT Oly body has to would prompt me to purchase it.   I am perfectly happy with my 16mp GX85's!!!

Agreed. That I am still actually using an Olympus E-M1 professionally tells the world all they need to know about me becoming a bit of a Luddite.
