It certainly looks desolate and abandoned.   I guess it is some sort of trellis for supporting a crop of grapes or beans?

Chris, that's a good question. Doesn't seem that grapes would grow well in the blazing heat of the desert, though, and I don't think they were for beans. I'll have to ask someone the next time I'm out there.

 

Yep. Borrego Springs CA is an oasis town that actually has (had) a vibrant agricultural scene, growing big pink grapefruits, oranges, and lemons, plus other stuff. But they rely on well water and were drawing it at over 4x its replenishment rate :o  Needless to say that can only go on so long ... they're now starting to abandon some of the fields. Don't know what's going to happen to that town since there's no cost effective way to get water in there.
