Looks to be a powerful beast! I am pretty sure it will come with a Leica-esque price tag too.

So @CarreraS, will this be winging its way to you before the next safari? :)

I'm wondering why camera makers are so hell-bent on this 8K video thing. We don't even get proper 4K content yet and now they want to hit us with 8K? I still can't really tell much of a difference between 720 and 1080p, tbh.

Post processing.

You can downsample and have the ability to deal with low light and noise better.

It also gives you the ability to do software based pans and zooms with better effect.

8k is NEEDED.

NetFlix is already [I'm told] requesting 4K or better video submissions.

4k is SO YESTERDAY.

Almost everyone shooting production video is shooting 4K or better - just because you can't get it delivered to your home [except by streaming] doesn't mean it's not needed.

Really - this is going to be $6500 USD camera - better be really good at everything a DLSR does today plus be as future-proof as possible.

Hot bodies (D800E, D810, D4, D500) and plenty of glass, but always lusting for more.

I really don't need a video camera.

I've never made a single movie with my D5 or Z6.

They could make a cheaper camera just for stills.

Neither do I, but clearly there is demand in the market.

People say the pro's need video.

I dunno - clearly I'm not a pro.

Unlikely. A flagship camera for all pros. The future is video so high in resolution that you can pull a still out equivalent to a single shot photo. There is already 20fps in bursts.

.

I'm finding that for my use I can get by just fine with 10 - 16 megapixel cameras.  I especially love my old CCD sensor cameras (Sony A350, Pentax K200/K10D, Nikon D60/D200/D80) for their outstanding colors!

There's no way I'm going to buy Nikon's new Z9 flagship camera for over $6,000 .  However, I'm certainly glad that they keep coming out with new models, because that reduces the used prices on their older cameras.

In the last 10 years there have not been any sensor or feature developments that have been must haves for me as a stills photographer who exclusively shoots fast, manual focus prime lenses.  Seems like recent developments have focused on: insanely high resolution, AF speed/accuracy, buffer speed, and video (all things that are not of interest to me).

What I'd love to see is cross-type focus sites that run/read-out independently of the photo sensors and global-shutter photo sensors with more dynamic range - 16bit would be a good place to be 😉

I find it interesting that photography went the opposite from audio for how to digitize and both formats blew it.

Audio went deep and slow trying for way too much DR and not enough sample rate.

Photography went shallow and fast with insufficient DR and [for most] way too many samples.

Hot bodies (D800E, D810, D4, D500) and plenty of glass, but always lusting for more.

I’ll tell you what’s “yesterday” for me: Netflix itself. Failure to entertain on all fronts. I hit the delete button last April and to be honest our local streaming service is a lot more diverse and costs half the money. Also includes sports.

Anyway, the problem with the low res cameras we are used to using becomes apparent when you migrate to hi resolution monitors. When I had that 5K iMac zooming to 100% on a 16MP image barely changed the view! If you’re not printing your photos this can become a bit of a problem down the line.

I use the video feature on my G9 a lot, but only on 1080p. The 4K and 6K modes would not pass go on my Mac Mini. I am considering the new M1 Mini, but this bloody pandemic has not made my financial situation fluid enough to warrant the expense (not to mention how PO’d I am that the new Mini I bought in Jan last year is now worthless).

'So @CarreraS, will this be winging its way to you before the next safari? :) '

Sorry Dallas, my dedicated obsolete email / web PC coughed its last last week .. it's sitting here waiting for a touch of technical magic to come back to me (ie when I get time) .. 😘

re Z9, I never buy too quickly after release - you pay a premium and get all the bugs ! And the price will likely curl my toes .. I'd rather keep the SQ2 Audi we got to replace J's Polo !

Looking at the chart of Nikon's Hi-res bodies vs Hi-Res glass, my D850 and Z7 already out-resolve my best longer glass, and the last Pro/Pro body I had was a D4, which went while they were still worth something.

Au contraire, my D3 still sits about with a push-pull AF-D 80-200 on it as a grab and go if I see something out the window, or a whippet / Bengal / Savannah strikes a ludicrous pose .. both are worth nits but work bl00dy well !

Safari, what safari ? .. 🙃

cheers, Maurice
