Walter, if I was considering moving from Lightroom to Capture 1, what sort of an ordeal is this? Is there a migration path that one would have to follow? A comparison resource of features would be good to see.

Don't get me wrong, I love Lightroom, but in the current climate of our currency dying an agonising death, it has now become way more expensive for me to subscribe to than was the case before. I have to keep my options open.

Excellent question Dallas.

Capture One can import Lightroom Catalogs, Aperture Libraries, and Media Pro catalogs. The Media Pro importer is not supported on macOS Catalina, but it is on Mojave.

I made videos for Lightroom and Aperture import into Capture One. They detail what gets migrated and what does not. Local adjustments, for example, do not. And not all global adjustments get migrated. All metadata, ratings, color labels, and keywords comes over. In Lightroom you must be using the default color label set for these to get transferred. A couple of the color labels are changed in the transfer, but I detail what they map to and they do come over.

Below are the videos I made for migrating Lightroom and Aperture, and below the videos are my notes that I made in preparation for recording these videos. All of the information regarding what is and is not transferred is detailed in the notes below the videos. Also, when you watch the videos, I demonstrate every step of my recommended process. At one point there is a pop-up during the initiation of import that tells you what will be transferred. If it is not on that pop-up, it is not transferred - plain and simple.

It is an imperfect process. You will lose some adjustments, and even those adjustments that are transferred are "converted" as best as Capture One is able to determine so even those will likely require some tuning post-migration.

I moved over 50K images into Capture One and edited all of them from scratch. I don't recommend that for the faint of heart. In fact, what I DO recommend now is one start with only new images, and over time, export small batches of Lightroom or Aperture images into their own catalogs or libraries, and importing / fixing up those images in Capture One. This makes the process manageable. It also means you have less to go back and re-do if you realize later you should have done something more or different with earlier batches. You could even save those intermediate LR catalogs or Aperture libraries just for that reason. In Capture One there are special albums called "Recent Imports". Each catalog or library you import into Capture One will have its own "Recent Import" album that includes the date, so it would be easy to go back to a specific one, delete all those images from the catalog, and re-do that specific import.

Here are notes that I made in preparation for these videos.

---------------

Migrating Adobe Lightroom Catalogs to Capture One Pro

Recommended Workflow for Migrating Lightroom Catalogs to Capture One

  • Create working directory to hold temporary LR and CO catalogs
  • Create master Capture One catalog
  • Export keywords from Lightroom master catalog to a flat text file
  • Import keywords into C1 master catalog keyword library
  • Migrate images from Lightroom to Capture One in small batches
    • Migrating in batches lets you learn CO and track progress
    • Export a batch from LR master catalog to small LR catalog
    • Create CO temporary catalog to import and validate small LR catalog
    • Import small LR catalog into CO temporary catalog
    • Validate and edit images in CO temporary catalog
    • Import CO temporary catalog into CO master catalog

Preparing to Migrate Lightroom Catalogs to Capture One Catalogs

  • Export keywords from Lightroom master catalog to a flat text file
  • Import keyword text file into C1 master catalog keyword library
  • NOTE – Commas are not permitted in keywords – comma is a separator character
  • Create a working directory for exported LR catalogs and temporary CO catalogs
  • Create an empty master Capture One catalog where your images will be managed
  • Become familiar with the Lightroom “Export this Folder as a Catalog” dialog screen
    • UNCHECK – Export negative files
    • UNCHECK – Build / Include Smart Previews
    • UNCHECK – Include available previews

What Lightroom Catalog information is imported into the Capture One Catalog

  • Image files are imported into Capture One by reference
  • Only Lightroom Default Color Set Labels import correctly to Capture One Color Labels
    • CO Default Color Labels – red, orange, yellow, green, blue, pink, purple
    • LR Default Color Labels – red, yellow, green, blue, purple
  • All keywords and IPTC metadata come over
  • All ratings come over
  • NOTE – Flags do not come over – filter for flagged images in LR and add special keyword

Differences Between Lightroom Collections and Capture One User Collections

  • Lightroom Collection Sets become Capture One Groups (Folders)
  • Lightroom Collections become Capture One Albums
  • Lightroom Collection Sets can be nested as much as desired
  • Lightroom nested Collection Sets become Capture One nested Groups – structure is maintained
  • Selecting a Capture One Group will not display all of the images in the Groups and Albums it contains
  • Selecting a Capture One Project WILL display all of the images in all the Albums it contains
  • Capture One Projects cannot be nested

---------------

Migrating Apple Aperture Libraries to Capture One Pro

What Aperture Library information is imported into the Capture One Catalog

  • Image files are imported into Capture One by reference
  • WHAT METADATA IS IMPORTED
    • Aperture Color Labels import correctly to Capture One Color Labels
      • AA Color Labels – red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, gray
      • CO Color Labels – red, orange, yellow, green, blue, pink, purple
      • NOTE: AA purple translates to CO pink, AA gray translates to CO purple
    • AA Duplicate Versions become CO Variants
    • All keywords and IPTC metadata come over
    • All ratings come over
  • WHAT METADATA IS NOT IMPORTED
    • Flags – suggest filtering for flagged images in AA and add special keyword
    • Custom Metadata – Move custom metadata field information to standard IPTC fields
    • Keyword Structure – Aperture keyword field does support nested keywords
    • Books, Slideshows, Light Tables, Web Journals, Web Pages, Image Stacks

Preparing to Migrate Aperture Libraries to Capture One Catalogs

  • Create an empty master CO catalog where your images will be managed
  • Relocate all originals outside the Aperture Library so it is a Referenced Library
  • Export keywords from master Aperture Library keyword tool to a flat text file
  • Import keyword text file into your new CO master catalog keyword library
  • NOTE – Commas are not permitted in keywords – comma is a separator character
  • Create a working directory for temporary AA libraries and CO catalogs
  • Become familiar with the Aperture “Export / Project as New Library” dialog screen
    • UNCHECK – Copy originals into exported library
    • UNCHECK – Copy previews into exported library
    • CHECK – Show alert when finished

Recommended Workflow for Migrating Aperture Libraries to Capture One

  • Create working directory to hold temporary AA libraries and CO catalogs
  • Create a new master Capture One catalog
  • Export keywords from master Aperture Library keyword tool to a flat text file
  • Import keywords into CO master catalog keyword library
  • Migrate images from Aperture to Capture One in small batches
    • Migrating in batches lets you learn CO and track progress
    • Export a batch from AA master library to small AA library
    • Create CO temporary catalog to import and validate small AA library
    • Import small AA library into CO temporary catalog
    • Validate and edit images in CO temporary catalog
    • Import CO temporary catalog into CO master catalog

Organization of Aperture Libraries vs Capture One User Collections

Similarities:

  • Aperture Projects are converted to Capture One Projects
  • Aperture Folders are converted to Capture One Groups (Folders)
  • Aperture Albums are converted to Capture One Albums
  • Aperture nested Folders become Capture One nested Groups
  • Selecting a Project displays all the images in all the Albums it contains
  • Browser/Viewer panel does not change when you change the selected Tool tab
  • Capture One has many built-in filters that let you search you catalog
  • Capture One creates a User Collection Group named after the imported Aperture Library
  • Your Aperture Library organization structure is recreated inside this Capture One Group
  • You can place your tool set on the left or right side of the browser / viewer
  • You can place your film strip at the bottom or along the side of the viewer
  • You can customize the user interface (in Capture One can define and switch between workspaces)
  • Full screen, dual-monitor and floating resizable tool palettes are supported

Differences:

  • Projects are how Aperture groups images. Albums are how Capture One groups images.
  • Capture One creates an Album in each imported Project that holds the Aperture Project images.
  • Aperture associates images with Projects. Capture One associates images with Albums.
  • Aperture Versions can reside in different Albums. Capture One variants cannot (except Smart Albums).
  • Aperture Stacks can have different images. Capture One stacks contain the variants of a single image.
  • Selecting a Folder in Aperture displays all the images it contains.
  • Selecting a Group in Capture One does not.

Very comprehensive! Thanks for this, Walter. I will delve deeper a little later on.

I do use the local adjustments feature in Lr extensively (in fact the majority of my product photography is done with this), so I need to know if there is a similar feature in C1? I don't care about work already done in Lr, it's all throw-away stuff anyway, but if I can't do this type of editing in C1 it won't be a starter for me, unfortunately.

Yes you can create local adjustments via different layers where you can draw masks or create them based on luminance values or color selections. These ave very powerful tools.

As @Mexecutioner says, layers are very powerful in Capture One. You can adjust any tool on a layer. Layers have standard brushed masks, gradient masks, radial masks, luminosity masks, and you can create new layers with masks from color selections. You can adjust brush opacity, hardness, flow, and whether or not it does edge detection. You can refine masks and adjust the feathering at their edges. Luminosity and Radial masks can be inverted. Capture One also has clone layers and heal layers where you select a source and target similar to Photoshop or Lightroom. Each layer also has a layer opacity adjustment slider.

There are a few Capture One features that cannot be used on layers:

  • crop / rotate / keystone correction
  • normalize tool (similar to "match" tool in PS)
  • black and white tool
  • vignette tool (use the radial mask instead - more powerful and flexible anyway)
  • film grain tool (you can add grain to simulate high ASA film)
  • spot / dust tool (I tend to use heal layers instead)

Today is the last day to take advantage of this offer.

I've decided to stick with Lightroom, Walter. The C1 product works out more expensive, even with the discount. I can't afford that kind of outlay at this time and then still have to train myself on how to use it.
