Well, I'm afraid I cannot answer your question, but at least I can say that Philippe Halsman was lucky because he didn't have to convince people that the image was not photoshopped. :P

I suppose you would get far with some cats, patience, and a bunch of assistants (+ camera, lens, and good light)  :)

Of course, it would be even better to create an original scene which differs from the one of Halsman.

If you are thinking of "throwing the cats", then that should not be  a serious obstruction. There would be ways of getting around such problems. :)
