Well captured Harrie.

I think Mike's comment may be seen as cynical, though he

may be right of course.

The image works because it makes one think!

I'm with Mike on this.  The posture is one we see in London a lot from certain immigrant beggars.  They are professionals.

I like the shot and agree it makes one think.

They have a branch in Copenhagen too. Don't want to sound cynical but they are easy to spot - as you say, same posture etc. Edited by Lars Hansen

Tony, I've seen many examples of this sort of begging in virtually everywhere in Europe I have been to!

It is always women usually with a child on tow!! And somewhere nearby is the gangmaster!!!

As it's a B/W picture I will not criticise its composition.

Are B&W pictures immune from compositional criticism, then? Is this a new rule?

Mike, many of the beggars on the streets here in Melbourne are indeed professional beggars.

They are "managed" by a syndicate who take their cut of the proceeds by "renting" out parts of the streets to individual beggars.  Our Lord Mayor seems powerless to shut them down.

To be honest with all of you I also had the impression that this lady begging did her "job" - I did observe her for quite a while and there was so much routine in her act / behavior that professionalism is likely.

I must say that I do not know if her job is voluntarily at all.

Overall I wanted to post a striking image which was not only getting critics in respect to on how well or bad the picture was made, but also to receive comments - including cynical ones - which reflect peoples ideas about this situation which is getting common in many cities.

Since this is the case my intention succeeded.

I'm with Mike on this.  The posture is one we see in London a lot from certain immigrant beggars.  They are professionals.

This image was shot in Cologne, Germany but we also do see them in various cities in Netherlands, and as other replies indicate it is wide spread.

I like the shot and agree it makes one think.

Thank you for liking the shot! See above.

Maybe I should have posted the image in the board photojournalism & street instead of in the board people.

Perhaps I should have left off the "its composition" ain't hindsight wonderful.  :(

I didn't want to criticise because I would probably criticised its B/Wness and not its content, hey ho.

Interesting that Harrie said this was Cologne, which is where I've seen lots of these beggars pestering people, also lots in Amsterdam (my favourite city) where one woman grabbed hold of my late wife and didn't want to let go and I had to physically force her off.

I reckon this may be the right forum as there are people in it!

I do not like these pretenders, these show beggars. Organized by fat man in fatter cars (Mercedes Benz S-Class, Audi A8 and the like). The people behind this beggar business, are coldblodded slave traders, pressing people to echo the inconographics of European art history into this play. I will not visit a trafficked whore I will not put money into the hat of these business baggers. I feel they should not be allowed to perform, because they feed a chain of ever new suppression, importing people from other countries to make them whores or baggers or slave workers or whatever pleases and profits the thugs in the big cars.

Criticism can be a combination of subject, content, technical aspects, framing, post precessing, etc.

The more I am criticised / challenged the more I can learn!

The business model of these gangsters is to exploit people. It only works if YOU/WE feed money in their cycle. To be sure you are not part of their business model you have to:

1) not visit whores.

2) not take illegal drugs.

3) not buy in shops /from companies who employ slave workers.

4) Not give money to beggars who obviously belong to the cartel. There are enough local real poor in need who are threatened away by the "professionals". You can reach them and you can give to them if you want to let their fate into your life.

A food chain of organized crime. Chewing people to death. Refugees. Desprate. Desolate. Displaced persons. Addicts.
