I was sorely tempted to crop it but I am irrevocably wedded to standard aspect ratios.
Is this any more appealing?

For me yes Lew..... I really like the boost in contrast.

On a side note personaly I consider 5x4 standard even when I shoot with a 3x2 camera.

sRGB clipping sucks and Adobe RGB is just as bad  Still no clue how to take decent pictures though, see afximages.com ;-(
