Correct. I exercise my "skills" in or around Lille, and with family or close friends. The difference this time is, instead of exercising myself (and possibly getting feedback on NG or elsewhere), I'll feel the pressure from a fierce bear of the North. There is a parallel here to my recent enrolling in an organ class, after so many years of practice. Self-teaching is fine, but having a "teacher" or "mentor" or "guru" (you name it) is a rejuvenating experience at least, and a rewarding one under certain conditions (willingness to accept a working discipline being the top one).

People very often have skills either littlke known to themselves or at least under-exploited. I hope to see some of these emerge and develop during the workshops.

You are correct in pointing out there is disipline (or hard work) involved. I'd say 90% of any successful photograph is due to that factor alone. There are no shortcuts or effortless approaches to success. But one needs the spark to get everythng moving.

I indeed stand by my earlier post, have to say it really depends upon the pricing. I shall pass among you with my begging bowl a bit later! :crazy:

This must be some new usage of the word exotic with which I am not familiar.

It is kind of interesting for a UK workshop that a significant number of non-UK members have pre-registered.

I just need my yearly dosage of nfoto vision :biggrin:

I haven't looked in detail into the availability of Elise for the weekend. Last time we met she was asking me about whether the D800E was right for her or not.

However, arrangements are coming into focus gently.

The basic plan is to base ourselves around the Birches Valley centre on Cannock Chase in Staffordshire.

I have identified the Premier Inn Rugeley as being quite cheap (£46/night for a twin room is the headline rate, I will work on some kind of discount for an early block booking) and very local. It has a bar, which is the main thing. With the population density in the UK there aren't really the kind of ascetic bunk houses in deserted wilderness that some other countries can offer. My strong preference is to base ourselves all in the hotel since it will promote the kind of social connection which will facilitate the workshop in general. Alternatively, this link has details of local guest houses.

I've made enquiries into the Forestry Commission classroom resources at Birches Valley and these are provisionally ours for the hiring any time except September 15th, which fits well with the proposed dates (see below).

From a logistics point of view, I propose something like the following:

Friday 14th Sept 2012: arrive mid-morning at Birches Valley, coffee, free-form exploration until lunchtime.
Lunch at Birches Valley
Classroom session mid-afternoon into early evening: setting up, socialising where everyone makes a personal introduction, talks about approaches to photography, people can exhibit images and have a full group critique of their work, discussion of potential good spots for next day.
Retire to hotel bar/restaurant

Saturday:
Breakfast at hotel
The *field* day and the day of observation. We decide on *one* spot and spend the day there. First half of the day people work individually, being assisted by the instructor who circulates within the group.
Lunch on the hoof supplied by Birches Valley.
Thereafter, we divide into smaller groupings (each comprising 2-3 people) which can pursue special themes (be these birds, landscape, close-ups, IR, or anything else taking people's fancy).
Retire to bar/restaurant at nightfall.
In the evening: people show some of the results from this day and we all discuss what is achieved.
Finally, we agree on a given challenge for each group to be conducted on Sunday.

Sunday: the *challenge* day where each group tries to solve their own challenge in the field. This will take about half the day.
Lunch at Birches Valley
Classroom session afternoon into early evening, basic processing of images then showing and discussing the results.
All along the instructor will be ready to help solve technical questions or issues that may arise. However, the main emphasis will *not* be on HOW, but WHY and WHEN, to obtain a photograph.
Disperse with tearful farewells, etc. Stragglers to form up in the bar.


I am proposing to roll all lunches in with the price - which I'm still working on. It will need to cover Bjørn's bar bill, which I gather can be ruinous. Accommodation will not be included, nor will evening meals or bar bills.

Given the level of mobility we will be displaying, elaborate computing setups are discouraged. Your own laptops (or space on mine), a projector and possibly my 30" apple cinema screen are the order of the day. All your camera gear needs to be person portable - feel free to bring your own sherpas/brolly girls (I hear Elise is quite good)/child labour but do expect everyone else to be bring gear of their own and not to be available to help you with yours.

The goal of the workshop is for it to be somewhat intense but very rewarding. Bjørn's expertise needs no endorsement from me and to have him here is a tremendous privilege - I intend for us to get as much as we can from him. Note that right now, everybody's expectation (including Bjørn's) is that Bjørn will be the instructor - but this by no means a legally binding commitment.

Feel free to ask about anything unclear but please be patient as some of the details will take a short while to resolve. Constructive suggestions are welcome.

Thank you for all your efforts organising this event.....

Elise has suggested the Travelodge Rugeley instead of the Premier Inn. It is cheaper and backs onto a Lake and a Park, so may be more desirable for us.

Basically all places set up for the pre-registrations are now filled.

Any further pre-registrations will be moved to the waiting list. Usually some places become vacant due to unforeseen contingencies so all hopes aren't lost. Even failing that, the keen interest shown means there might be another workshop (next year?).

Please note that unfortunately on the 14th of September is the day of my annual reunion for which I'm tasked to take the pictures. So sadly I must release my place at the workshop to another person!

Sorry for any inconvenience caused. I would have really liked to have been there. :suicide:

Folks, Bjørn and Damian have set the pricing for this workshop at £250. Those of you who put yourselves on the pre-book list will be contacted in the next few days by myself to confirm if you still want to participate.

If the answer is yes then you will be sent an invoice for the workshop via our online billing system, which you can pay by PayPal or by credit card (2Checkout). Please note though, that our billing system operates in USD, so the invoice will be in USD and the amount will be converted on the day of the invoice.

Important to note that accommodation is not included in the price of the workshop, so if you are coming from far, please get in touch with Damian regarding your options in this regard.

Looking forward to reading about another successful NG workshop! :)
