My vote for 5 stars and outstanding, goes only for the "K" and early Ai-model produced 1974-79 with 6/6 design!
The first 2 designs with 7/7-elements are pre-historic and comatose, so to speak ;-) and the newest models with 5/5 design are merely average.
I have the 35mm f/2.8 K (pre-Ai) that I have converted to Ai myself with a file. It is the only prime I have that compared to my 24-70mm is sharper! It is totally amazing on my D600, and is THE one lens I use for planned tripod groupshots. I'm sure it would even outresolve a D800.
Bokeh is great! a rare finding on wide-angles. Vignetting is light even wide open, and zero distortion!
Nikon were so proud of this lens at the time, that they wrote an article on it! (Now on their website:
They sell extremely cheap on the used-marked but are quite rare to find, as the later 5/5 versions were produced in much larger numbers.
