The lens will focus a little closer than 6" by the scale (5.8" according to Sigma). At F/22, while you will likely lose some sharpness to diffraction, you could probably have decent focus to as close as about 1.5", or hyperfocus from roughly 8" to infinity. There is a handy set of DoF indexes or scale marks on the lens, marked for F/ 22, 16, 11 and 8 on both sides of the focus index, plus an 'R' mark for infrared focus offset (to the right.) I have not tried shooting IR yet with this lens. There is a filter holder for gels built onto the rear of the lens (missing on the Nikkor 14-24 / 2.8 -- a grievous omission!)
I haven't shot with the Nikkor 14 / 2.8 AF, but the Sigma is reputed to compare favorably. It is a true 'Fisheye': it covers 180° Angle of view (on the diagonal.) Distortion is a given based on the physics of this AoV, but there does not appear to be much extra induced by optical fault.
:-X I don't recommend many Sigma or other 3rd parts lenses for Nikon F mount mostly because of poor construction or design, features that are mostly marketing gimmicks (like inferior macro or an APO designation on lenses that are NOT truly Apochromatic), inferior materials and construction, and sample variation. These are the very things that most of the high end consumer grade and professional Nikkor lenses obviate, but ... > I recommend this lens (and Sigma's 150 / 2.8 Macro too,) for Fx and (probably) Dx Nikons.
